Habitat: essentially an offshore species that may be found from the surface down to depths of up to 500 m. Although this species may occur in the Azores throughout the year, it appears to be most abundant from August to November.

Principal fishing methods: surface longline.

Biology: Swordfish may reach a maximum reported size of 455 cm (650 kg) and a maximum reported age of 17 years.

Conservation status: locally caught swordfish have been allocated a minimum commercial size of 125 cm or 25 kg. Atlantic stocks are overexploited
